He is currently working at Bielefeld University as a research associate in the project “Visions of Policing: How Visual Technologies Shape Police Oversight and Training”, which is funded by the Open Research Area for the Social Sciences Research Group. In this project, Jasper Janssen investigates the implementation of bodycams in German police agencies and how these technologies are transforming police work and training, as well as the relationship between citizens and the police. As part of his doctoral research, he also explores how cooperation (or willingness to cooperate) between citizens and the police is being renegotiated in the context of new forms of police visibility through visuality-centered technologies and mediatisations. Previously, he conducted research in the project “Situational Awareness: Sensing Security in the City”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). His work there included examining the significance of sensitivity and preparedness in contemporary security thinking, the handling and training for “life-threatening operational situations,” and the implementation of virtual reality training. He also studied how civil society and affected communities negotiate the phenomenon of stochastic terrorism.

Another core area of his work is the phenomenon of police image and public relations, particularly on digital, visuality-centered platforms. He holds academic degrees in Sociology and Human Geography (Bachelor’s: Friedrich Schiller University Jena) and in Criminological Social Research (Master’s: International Criminology, University of Hamburg).

Publications

Papers in Books and Journals

In print: Berger, Tom; Egbert, Simon; Janssen, Jasper (2025) Einsatz und Regulierung von polizeilichen Bodycams in Deutschland – Eine Bestandsaufnahme.
